💖 Does anyone read job ads?

Hey Reader!

AI is helping candidates apply to hundreds of jobs a day. Your inbox is overflowing. And most of them aren't even close to qualified.

So what does the HR Tech industry offer you? Tools to sort through the mess faster. Platforms to source and outreach to more candidates. Solutions built for a problem that isn't actually your problem.

Your problem isn't finding candidates. It's attracting the 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 ones.

What if you had a storytelling coach who already knew your voice?

That's Stanley. I've been using it to turn my everyday work moments into LinkedIn posts that actually sound like me — not generic AI fluff.

Here’s what I love about it:

  • It helps me shape my stories and find the right hook
  • When I have writer’s block, it suggests story ideas based on MY content history
  • It remembers previous conversations, so it knows what stories I should tell next
  • Everything is based on my actual LinkedIn posts and voice — no made-up AI nonsense

If you’re trying to attract candidates through storytelling (which you should be after reading this newsletter 😉), Stanley can help you turn those moments you’re spotting into posts that resonate with the people you want to hire.

Think of it as your storytelling coach, strategist, and editor rolled into one.

So how do you fix it?

You can spend your entire budget on tools that promise to help you manage the flood. Or you can do what has always worked and will continue to work long after the latest AI tool gets acquired or sunsets:

Repel the many. Attract the few.

You do this by telling the right stories.

I was working with a hiring manager on an e-commerce manager role. Simple title, but it meant something different at every company. We were drowning in unqualified applicants. Rewrote the job ad multiple times. Nothing changed.

So I asked her to record a short video. Don't talk about the job. Talk about the backstory. Why we're hiring. Who would thrive here. Who you are as a manager.

We added that video to the job ad and shared it on social.

Everyone we interviewed already understood the role. They could see themselves in the actual job before we even got on a call. We didn't just hire faster. We hired 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵.

And finding these stories? It's not hard. You just need a system to notice them.

I gave a talk at RecFest breaking down exactly how:

  • The 3 lenses to spot stories hiding in your day-to-day
  • A simple daily practice so you never run out of content ideas
  • The GSD framework (Grab, Serve, Direct) for videos that convert
  • How to build a story spotter network to catch moments even when TA isn't in the room

Storytelling is how you'll win at recruiting in 2026. Not better job posts. Not more tech. Stories.

Trust me, you'll never look at your day-to-day the same again. Sorry in advance. And you're welcome. 💖

Hey Reader! It's been a while! I've been heads down working on a full rebrand for my podcast and for this newsletter, and honestly, I've been kinda scared to share it with you. When I started this newsletter it was all about challenging the rules of work, especially in hiring. It started with no official name, then borrowed the name of my podcast, Throw Out The Playbook, but every week, it was about becoming a more strategic recruiter. But along the way, the focus shifted. It turned out the...

Throw Out The Playbook by Rhona Pierce This issue presented by: Hey Reader! We’re almost there! That’s what I keep telling myself as I push through this week… I’m taking most of next week off and that’s what’s been my motivator to get things done, but boy has it been hard. There’s something about December that makes me not want to work. Am I the only one? Just in case you need some motivation or want to hang out with me virtually, I have a few ideas… Join me every Monday LIVE at 3pm ET on the...
